Fatigue analysis in steels is crucial in structural applications as small defects can lead to catastrophic failure. As such, I have been focused on this failure analysis of structural materials that have fractured in less than five million fatigue cycles in accordance with ASTM guideline, by introducing advanced multi-scale analysis. Using optical microscopy(OM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) for characterization, a pronounced increase in the number and sizes of pores was observed, particularly within the outer regions. Chemical analysis revealed that almost pores contain MnS phase, indicating that these pores are likely to appear near it. Through this in-depth approach to analyzing steel bars, our lab has gained insights into how cyclic stress loading (i.e. fatigue) affects plastic deformation.
